Winter Weather Advisory Minimal Snow Inland Rain Coast

We were unimpressed by this system yesterday. We were unimpressed by this system last night, and we remain unimpressed by this system today. Yes Winter Weather Advisories are up today for what will be two bursts of precipitation that will be mostly rain at the coast and a mix or wet snow inland. The first burst moves through this morning, the second comes when the surface low begins to organize offshore this evening.

The NWS snow forecast above makes a little more sense this morning as they have shaved an inch or so off the top numbers and they are now more in line with my forecast from Saturday morning. There just isn’t enough cold air plain and simple for anything more than a minimal event.

Clouds have returned overnight and we are overcast and the radar shows precipitation moving up the coast which is mostly rain with snow on the northwest side. Movement is to the northeast.

Our low that is moving up the coast will slowly slide to the east tonight. That will lead to round two of precipitation which will be mostly snow inland and north and mostly rain or a mix along the coast. The HRRR model shows the low moving from west to east and it all ends overnight.

Weather conditions improve Monday and we will see some sunshine break through the clouds with highs in the low to mid 40s. Tuesday Wednesday into Thursday will be dry. The low offshore will hang around for awhile and strengthen a bit making things a bit breezy for later Tuesday and Wednesday. Each day we will have some sun, no precipitation and highs by day in the upper 30s and lower 40s, lows by night in the mid 20s to lower 30s.

The next storm system will be coming out of the Plains and heading east across the Southern States. There is a question of whether this system will turn up the coast or get suppressed south of us. That will depend on tonight’s low getting out of the way and allowing this low to climb northward. This system will probably bring some snow to the Mid Atlantic states especially inland. We will see whether it makes the turn northward or not.  Weather geeks complain about not having blocking. Well this is what happens when you have too much of it and systems get suppressed to the south rather than turn northward.
