Winter Storm Winding Down Next Storm System Over The Weekend

Our major winter storm which in some places was record breaking, continues to slowly wind down today. Overnight we have seen some areas of snow inland with some light rain or drizzle along the coast. As the day wears on we will see some patches of on and off snow mainly from NYC west and south. Late today some of those lighter snows will move to the northeast as the low pulls away and this will be the last of it as the storm exits to the northeast tonight.

Additional snow accumulations today will be on the order of an additional coating to a couple of inches.Temperatures today will be mostly in the low to mid 30s. There is still a bit of a wind issue today making it feel colder.

The extent of the snow bands remains rather impressive as they extend across Northern New England and upstate NY while some bands to the south have pushed into the Central Appalachians as evident on both regional radars. We will see this very slowly wind down today and tonight.

The surface and upper air storm will finally get a kick from the next weather system now in the west and the storm exits tonight. Any snow ends before midnight and we should see skies partially clear by morning. Lows will be in the 20s. Wednesday looks better with a mix of sun and clouds. Highs will be in the 30s. Winds will still be busy through the day.

Thursday brings another day of moderation with sunshine giving way to some late day arriving clouds. Highs will be in the 30s to perhaps near 40. Then the next cold front approaches with some showers for Friday. It could start out as some snow or sleet especially inland. This is not going to be a big precipitation producer. Highs could reach into the 40s before the front passes and then it turns colder for the weekend.

This front on Friday stalls out and more energy drops southeast from Canada and strengthens. We see the European model taking a low across the Southern States and turning northward Sunday, strengthening it to a major storm as it heads eventually into New England. Other models show varying degrees of bullishness for storm development but not necessarily for snow impacts. Unlike our current storm which is basically moving at a snails pace, this one will move faster. It does open the door for some snow on Sunday. We will begin to focus our attention on this later today.
