Winter Storm Watch Eastern PA, New Jersey Lower Hudson Valley Long Island Connecticut

Winter Storm Watch is now posted for all of Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey (except shore and south coastal counties) the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, Connecticut and Long Island for later Wednesday into Thursday morning. In addition Coastal Flood Watches are posted for the Long Island and New Jersey shore lines for the potential for high tide coastal flooding. Today is a new moon so tides are going to be running high regardless. Now add a coastal storm with a northeast wind and you have a recipe for coastal flooding.

REGIONAL RADAR

It has been a gloom and doom day with rain and some inland areas saw wet snow mixing in. All of this slides offshore this evening and skies should clear. Winds will become strong and gusty from the northwest. Temperatures by morning will settle in the 20s to around 30. Tuesday will be breezy to start with sunshine but most highs won’t get out of the 30s.

Tuesday night is a critical night with a very cold high to the north and northerly winds bringing down that cold air all the way to the Carolinas. Skies will be clear to start but clouds will likely arrive before daybreak. Lows will be in the teens to lower 20s just about everywhere.

Weather models have been coming closer together on this storm. The biggest issue is the cold air from the high to the north. Today’s models continue to indicate that the cold air will be more important and difficult to dislodge. This may keep sleet and rain from mixing in for coastal areas east of NYC ( though some brief mixing is likely). Along coastal New Jersey it will start as rain and accumulations may have to wait until early Thursday morning after winds turn north on the backside of the low.

The potential of up to a foot of snow is possible though amounts could be lower as you head east across Long Island and Connecticut. The highest amounts will probably be just west and north of the immediate coast.
