Winter Storm Warnings Long Island Today Up To A Foot of Snow West, Less East

Long Island has a triple working this morning with Winter Storm, Coastal Flood, and High Wind Warnings up for today into tonight. This is going to be a busy day as bands of heavy snow come up from the south on the radar. Our coastal low is developing and will be inching northward.

The new NAM from overnight is rather bullish for bands of heavy snow into this afternoon and there might even be a few thunderstorms thrown into the mix just for good measure. The satellite is showing bright white clouds to our south as tropical moisture is feeding northward around a strong and large upper air storm just to our west and head for the coast.

It is a straight forward forecast for today. Snow heavy at times with the chance for a thunderstorm. Winds will gust past 50 mph. Moderate to major coastal flooding at high tides today and Tuesday. Temperatures will be in the 20s and the gradually rise to 30 or higher late this afternoon from southeast to northwest. Snow will mix and change to sleet late afternoon and evening but not before we put down some sizeable accumulations.

The NWS map above shows snow totals through 7pm this evening or when snow changes to sleet. The NWS snow forecast map below shows snow totals for the entire storm as there will be some additional snow with this Tuesday and Tuesday night on the back side.

Once the main area of snow shifts northward our precipitation will lighten up tonight to either sleet or some light rain as temperatures edge to the lower and middle 30s. The further west and north you go the longer this process of change takes place. I don’t think the change to sleet will impact snow totals much given the heavy bands of snow forecast to move through today.

Overnight into early Tuesday not much will occur. However this forecast is complicated by a very slow moving storm and a strong upper low that is also slow moving and will be to the southeast. This creates a scenario of backside snow developing later Tuesday and the NAM as well as some other models pick up on this. Additional accumulating snows can’t be ruled out for Long Island later Tuesday into early Wednesday morning. This system should finally pull out after that and weather conditions should improve later Wednesday.
