Will DC get anymore snow this season?

2 min read

If history is any indication our snowfall chances are dwindling.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Has D.C. seen the last bit of snow for this season?

Though the chances of snow decrease significantly as we move toward the end of February, winter weather in March and even April is not off the table,

March
The last time we saw accumulating snowfall in March was in 2018. D.C. picked up 4.1 inches on March 21. When we look at the data over the last 10 years March has been the snowiest month of the year four times, most recently in 2018. Over the last 30 years, NOAA says that D.C.’s average snowfall increased nearly 50%, from 1.3 inches to 2 inches. Data shows us that most of the accumulating snow that we see in March falls in the first half of the month.

April
The chances of seeing accumulating snow in April for the D.C. region are very low. Most recently, we saw measurable snow in April 2007 with only 0.4 inches recorded. The latest into the month that D.C. saw snowfall was over 125 years ago. On April 28th, 1898 D.C. recorded half an inch of snow.

So if you are hoping to see a few more flakes this season all hope isn’t lost. Though the chances are low, there is still time to see wintery weather in the DMV.
