What creates the horizontal banding on shelf clouds?

I’m trying to understand the formation and structure of shelf clouds. From watching timelapse footage it seems like cold air is flowing down and outward from behind the cloud from and pushing warm air upward. Is that correct? Are the banded structures formed by the warm air that’s being pushed upward and forward by the front? They look a bit like folded compressed fabric but also similar to lenticular clouds, just trying to figure out how to model them correctly.
