Very Cool Tomorrow; Frost By Early Thursday : The Alabama Weather Blog

3 min read

COLD FRONT ON THE WAY: Temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s across much of Alabama this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. Clouds will increase tonight ahead of a cold front that will pass through the state early tomorrow morning. A few sprinkles are possible over the northern quarter of the state along the front, but most places will see no rain at all in a dry airmass.

Tomorrow will be a mostly sunny, windy, and very cool day. Temperatures won’t get out of the 50s over the northern third of the state, and a brisk northwest wind of 15-25 mph will make it feel cooler. Winds will die down tomorrow night, and we expect a good bit of frost early Thursday morning with a clear sky and light wind. For most of North/Central Alabama, temperatures will be in the 33-40 degree range, and a few traditionally colder spots could briefly touch the freezing mark.

Thursday will be a sunny day with a high in the mid 60s. The weather stays dry Friday… with a mix of sun and clouds we project a high in the upper 60s. Clouds will increase Friday night, with rain possible after midnight.

STORMY SATURDAY: Saturday continues to look like a very wet day for all of Alabama. SPC maintains a risk of severe thunderstorms for the southern half of the state, where instability values will be higher.

Storms over South Alabama Saturday will be capable of producing strong winds, small hail, and a brief tornado or two. Rain amounts statewide will be in the 1-2 inch range… isolated flooding issues are possible.

Dry air arrives Saturday night, and Sunday will be a much better day with ample sunshine along with a high in the mid 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will be warm and dry. The high Monday will be close to 80, followed by low to mid 80s Tuesday. Showers and storms return in the Wednesday/Thursday time frame… too early to know if severe storms will be an issue. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

RACE WEEKEND: It will be a challenge to get in the races Saturday at Talladega; rain and thunderstorms are likely much of the day with a high in the 70s. But, Sunday will be a delightful day for the running of the Geico 500… the sky will be sunny with a high between 73 and 77 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1920: Tornadoes in Mississippi and Alabama killed 219 persons. Six tornadoes of F4 intensity were reported. Aberdeen, Mississippi was hard hit by an F4 tornado that killed 22 people. This same tornado killed 20 in Marion County, Alabama. Nine people in one family died in Winston County, Alabama.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: A strong F3 tornado moved across the town of Utica, near LaSalle-Peru in north-central Illinois. This tornado destroyed several homes, a machinery building, and a tavern. The roof of the tavern collapsed, killing eight people inside; many of these people had come into town from nearby mobile homes, seeking sturdier shelter.
