Traffic, road conditions and slick spots in DMV Monday morning

Here are the latest updates on road conditions in the DMV.

WASHINGTON — Beware of icy conditions and slick spots on the roads in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area following the first snowstorm of 2021. 

Another round of snow is expected to hit the area again on Monday with a mix of drizzle, freezing drizzle and light snow before most of the region transitions back to snow later in the day.

Crews are out and about on the roads Monday morning clearing out what was left of the snow that impacted the region Sunday and prepping the roads for what is to come later Monday.

We’re tracking the latest road conditions and slick spots in the region. Here’s what’s going in our area:

5:31 a.m. — All lanes on northbound I-95 are reopened in Fredericksburg following a tractor-trailer crash at the Rappahannock River Bridge.

5:30 a.m. — A vehicle is in a ditch on Fairfax County Parkway at Stringfellow Road. Police are working to get an officer on the scene due to several reported crashes on Rt. 28. 

5:30 a.m.– Another crash was reported on northbound Rt. 28 after Rt. 50. 

4:52 a.m. —   All northbound lanes are closed on northbound Rt. 28 in Chantilly, Va. due to icy conditions. There’s a sheet of ice on northbound Rt. 28 at McLearen Road, Fairfax County Police said. A salt truck has been requested to the scene.

4:51 a.m. — The City of Manassas is prepared with 10,000 gallons of brine, 3,000 tons of salt and 500 tons of sand to treat the roads Monday. WUSA9 Reporter Nicole DiAntonion says roads and sidewalks in the area are very slick.

4:50 a.m. — Looks like Interstate 270 Frederick, Md. is clear. It’s reported that ice and slush were moved from the roads to the shoulder.

4:46 a.m. — Icy conditions reported on Route 28 in the area between Air and Space Museum Parkway and McLearen Road. Fairfax County Police are reporting multiple crashes, including a two-vehicle crash on Rt. 28 under the McLearen Road overpass.

4:45 a.m. — A three-vehicle crash was reported on Rt. 28 at Air and Space Museum Parkway. The Air and Space ramp to Rt. 50 is closed due to ice.
Salt truck crews have been requested at the scene. 

4:44 a.m. — Several salt trucks were spotted on the roads in Manassas, Va. clearing roads and prepping for the next round of snow Monday.

4:15 a.m. — Reports of slick spots and snow-covered side streets early Monday morning. Road crews are out treating the roads.

4:11 a.m. — Northbound Interstate 95 is closed in Fredericksburg, Va. due to a tractor-trailer crash at Rappahannock River Bridge. 

3:59 a.m. — Snow crew drivers were seen filling up their trucks with salt to begin treating the roads in D.C. following the icy road conditions created overnight.

Timing: 

Monday: Now – 6 a.m. Mix of freezing drizzle and light snow north and west of D.C. with a mix or just light rain/drizzle south and east of the District. 

Monday: 6 a.m. – 9 a.m. – Occasional light freezing rain or light rain continues in metro D.C. Northwest of D.C. we have light snow or a light mix.

Monday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. – A mix of light freezing rain, rain, and some light snow is forecast, with much of D.C. transitions back to snow around noon. Just light rain southern Maryland through central Virginia.

Monday 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. – Occasional light snow showers and light snow. 

Monday 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Tuesday – Light snow and flurries continue.

Tuesday: 5 a.m. – 5 p.m. – Scattered light snow showers, up to another 1/2 inch of snow is forecast.
