Snow Showers Exit Chilly Dry Weather Through the Weekend

Snow showers moved through this morning if only to remind us that it is winter even though it hasn’t snowed since mid December. Some sunshine has broken through the clouds this afternoon and temperatures are topping in the upper 30s to around 40. There are no issues going forward though we still have a couple of weak upper troughs and a cold front that are going to move through between now and Friday. None of the these will cause us any issues of consequence.

The regional radars are still showing some snow shower activity across New England though it cuts of on the Middle Atlantic regional radar. Lake effect snows will continue across lake effect land in upstate New York for another day and every once in a while, a snow shower could sneak into the area. They will be few and far between.

We are on our way down to the upper teens to mid 20s by Thursday morning as skies should at least partially clear out. Thursday we will see sunshine with a few clouds. Highs will be in the upper 30s to around 40. Another cold front passes Friday with some sun and clouds. It will be breezy with highs in the 30s.

The weekend is pretty straight forward. Sunshine and cold for both Saturday and Sunday with highs both days in the 30s. Nights will be cold and clear with lows in the upper teens to lower 20s in most places. Winds will pick up for awhile on Saturday before dropping off Saturday night as a storm develops well offshore and the pressure gradient tightens a bit.

We have been watching for signs of the blocking to the east to relax just enough to allow for something to emerge from the west. Indeed today weather models including the European, Icon and Canadian model show such a relaxation. The GFS however suppresses everything well to the south but we will give that model another run or two to catch up to the others.

Should this relaxation verify it will open the door for low pressure to move out of the Plains and into the Lower Ohio Valley. The primary low will fade as a secondary develops off the Delaware/Maryland coast. Cold air will wedge in from large high pressure building across Canada and this could bring snow here early next week. We have noted that models were going to be all over the place due to the strong block but they seem to be slowly figuring out what is going to happen. For now we will state that there is a chance for snow late Monday into Tuesday for much of the area from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and leave it at that. We will give the models a few more days to solve this puzzle but it will hinge on the block relaxing and the northern part of the jet stream not coming down and squashing everything to the south.
