Sleet Over West Alabama; Watch Out for Black Ice on Bridges and Overpasses : The Alabama Weather Blog

1 min read

…Sleet is falling over West Alabama. An upper-level disturbance is causing precipitation over Central Mississippi and West Alabama. In Alabama, much of it has been sleet. Sleet is now falling across parts of Pickens, Greene, Hale, northern Sumter, and southwestern Tuscaloosa counties. There is some sleet over Elmore County. The sleet shouldn’t cause any travel problems.

All precipitation should change to a little light rain and sprinkles this morning as it lifts northeastward across West Alabama. The Tuscaloosa area could see heavy sleet.

We are dealing with some other weather problems this morning:

…Freezing fog in some areas is causing ice to form on some exposed surfaces.

…Some black ice on area bridges and overpasses where standing water has frozen overnight or freezing fog has formed ice. One example is the Red Mountain Expressway in downtown Birmingham. Be very careful if you’re driving between now and 10 a.m.. Temperatures should be well above freezing by then.
