Roads Beginning to Get Slippery in Birmingham : The Alabama Weather Blog

2 min read

You can see the problem areas developing on Google Maps traffic layer tonight…

Things will only get worse as we go through the night. Precipitation has increased in the past hour southwest of Birmingham and this precipitation will move across the Metro over the next two hours.

John Talbot feeding great information from the scanners…and he has 27F with a crunchy driveway, made so by accumulating sleet.

Birmingham FD reports I-59/20 is now icy in the vicinity of the Airport with two wrecks reported there.

Jeffco Sheriff Dept reporting I-59 starting to ice near Academy Dirve.

Kimberly PD in North Jefferson reporting US-31 is icing over in their jurisdiction. Warrior PD reporting same as well as other roads in their area.

Gardendale PD reporting bridge on Barber Drive leading into Mount Olive is now frozen over.

All roads in Oneonta impassable. Most other roads in Blount County impassable as well.

Needless to say, please do not try to travel unless absolutely necessary. Hopefully everyone has heeded the forecasts and advice and is where they need to be tonight and is able to stay in place until conditions improve, which might not be until Wednesday. Skies will remain mostly cloudy over North and Central Alabama most of tomorrow. There could be some clearing in a dry spot over the I-59/20 Corridor from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham that could allow some sunshine, but with the cold temperatures in the teens and lower 20s all day, things will be slow to improve.

Tomorrow night’s lows are cold. The forecasted 8F at Birmingham would be colder than the December 2022 cold wave which featured two nights of 9F.
