Happy 150th to the Indianapolis National Weather Service!

On February 4, 1871 the U.S. Army Signal Corps (predecessor to US Weather Bureau and NWS) established an office in downtown Indianapolis in Blackford’s Block on the southeast corner of Washington and Meridian streets.

The first official Signal Corps/Weather Bureau/NWS observation at Indianapolis would be taken February 10th, 1871, when a high temperature of 28 degrees and zero precipitation was recorded. Low temperatures would be added to the daily observation on March 1.

Snowfall measurements were generally only taken on Christmas Day early in their history. Daily snowfall totals would be added March 1, 1884, with snow depth measurements sporadic at best until daily depth measurement began March 1, 1947.
