Officials prepare roads for Tuesday commute

Officials are warning drivers about potential icy conditions.

WASHINGTON — D.C. officials are warning drivers about potential icy conditions ahead of Tuesday morning’s commute.

“There will be plenty of salt on the road, and that’s what we are trying to do to help. We do know that because of the temperature, that there will be some freezing rain and some freezing that will take place and we are prepared for that,” Timothy Spriggs, Director of D.C.’s Department of Public Works (DPW) told WUSA9.

On Monday afternoon, a Metrobus was captured on video struggling to get up a slight incline on Wisconsin Avenue, Northwest in the Glover Park neighborhood due to the slick road conditions.

DPW says streets have been salted and brined, but despite the snow preparations, the icy road conditions may continue into Tuesday, especially on bridges and shady spots.

On Monday evening the bridge on H St. NE behind Union Station was closed due to the weather conditions.

Spriggs says DPW crews will be working overnight to clear the roads for the morning. The team will be focusing their efforts on the main roadways like their snow emergency routes and the major national highways, then they will move on to neighborhood streets.

According to Spriggs an inch and a half to two inches has to be on the roadway to put the plow down and really make a difference.

“Take your time. If you don’t have to be on the road, don’t be on the road. And if you are on the road, be aware of the big trucks going down salting,” Spriggs added.

AAA is taking it one step further, advising drivers to avoid sudden acceleration, braking, and steering, and if you have antilock brakes, they recommend you use steady pressure and avoid pumping.
