Midday Nowcast: Dry Through Friday

2 min read

NEW DAY, SAME FORECAST: Today is another mainly sunny day with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s across Alabama. Tomorrow and Friday, this weather will persist with mainly sunny, cool afternoons, with clear and cold nights as lows will be in the 30s and 40s.

USA BRIEF: A winter storm will begin to impact portions of the Southern Rockies and High Plains today. Light to heavy snowfall will be possible through Thursday especially across southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Meanwhile across the southeast, a front stalled across south Florida will increase the threat for heavy to excessive rainfall over the next few days which could lead to isolated flooding.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Finally we have a better understanding of the forecast for the weekend. A deep surface low will form in the Gulf of Mexico Friday, and will move northeast across the Florida Peninsula by Sunday. This will not be a tropical system, but will look and act like one with very gusty winds and torrential rainfall for portions of Florida. Some of the rain will spread north into Alabama Saturday night and Sunday, but the heaviest rain with this system will be south and east of Alabama.

With the low south of Alabama, there is no risk of severe storms, and probably no thunder. Rain amounts for most of the state will be a quarter inch or less; the exception is the far southeast counties where places like Dothan could see up to one inch. Highs this weekend will be close to 60°, with lows mostly in the 40s.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks generally dry for much next week with seasonal temperatures. High in the 50s and 60s, with lows in the 30s and 40s. For the long range, through the week of Christmas, the pattern favors a mild, Pacific air mass, which means no chance of a White Christmas for much of the U.S.
