Midday Nowcast: Cloudy and Cold : The Alabama Weather Blog

2 min read

The weather has turned sharply colder behind the front and we are seeing mainly cloudy conditions, a brisk north wind, and scattered light rain and snow flurries. Temperatures are struggling to get out of the 30s across the northern half of Alabama today. For most locations, the sky will not clear today.

COLD WEEKEND: The sky clears tomorrow, and both Saturday and Sunday will be sunny, cool days with clear, cold nights…temperatures will be below freezing over the northern half of the state both mornings. Highs will be in the 40s tomorrow, but 50s will be common on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be unsettled at times with more clouds than sun and scattered showers at times Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, another front looks to move through, and could bring storms back to Alabama. Highs will be in the 60s through most of the week; some places could reach the low 70s by mid-week. Cooler air will arrive to end the week.

YESTERDAY: As James said this morning, yesterday’s storm system overperformed with the number of tornadoes and damage reports and sadly with loss of life. Each event is different, with some underperforming, others overperforming, and some doing exactly like we expect. That is why we always try and approach each event the same, with caution; reminding everyone to be prepared, plan ahead, and be ready to take action. Never compare any event to previous ones, because each one is different and will have different outcomes. In the words of the late, great J.B. Elliott, “When it comes to thunderstorms in Alabama, expect the unexpected.”
