HRD participates in the 24th AVAPS™ Users meeting – Hurricane Research Division

The Airborne Vertical Atmospheric Profiling System (AVAPS™) is held annually by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Earth Observing Laboratory to discuss Science, Operations and Dropwindsonde Technology, along with having an open discussions for the different topics. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. HRD scientists made two presentations at the recent meeting held virtually on 20-21 April. Kathryn Sellwood presented recent research and uses of dropwindsondes at HRD, including the 1267 dropwindsondes released by NOAA aircraft in and around tropical cyclones during the 2021 hurricane season, and recent research using data from the most recent and previous seasons.

Sarah Ditchek talked about the impact of dropwindsonde data on forecasts from the experimental Basin-Scale HWRF and NOAA’s operational Global Forecast System.
