Help identifying a strange phenomenon happening with ice and wind : meteorology
1 min read
Here’s a photo I took last year in Norway:
Mountains near Blåfjellbrakka, Norway — https://goo.gl/maps/JkTZT53H8UuYqZZU7
I stopped in this precise place because I was hearing a strange sound, as if this mountain was singing or whistling. The sound was coming from those rocks as far as I could understand.
I didn’t record the sound unfortunately, but since then I’ve been trying to understand what this strange whistling/singing was.
Temperature was around 12-14°C, moderately windy. Still some ice or snow as you can see in the picture. The sun was shining and quite high in the sky being summer.
My suspicion is that the ice melting into water, interacting with the wind, helped by the shape of this mountains, effectively some sort of natural amphiteater, created that incredible sound.
Any ideas?
