Heavy snow expected in Buffalo

1 min read

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo is bracing for over two feet of snow Friday and Saturday.

Strong west/southwest winds will blow over Lake Erie and crank out a narrow band of very heavy snow. Buffalo will receive a lot of snow, with some bands just south of the city that could produce upwards of three feet.

Lake Erie’s water temperature is 52 degrees. As a cold wind blows over the relatively warm water, the air is condensed out in narrow bands of heavy snow.

The temperature of the land is running around 30 degrees. Late in the winter when the lakes freeze over lake effect snow is no longer possible.

Some of Buffalo biggest lake effect snows include:

January 11, 1982: 18.3″
December 16, 1983: 12.0″
January 19, 1985: 15.6″

One computer model has the snow off the charts.
