Heat Index DC around 100

2 min read

Humidity combined with highs in the 90s will bring sweltering heat on Friday, and part of Saturday.

WASHINGTON — Another scorching day is on tap in the DMV with highs in the 90s, but the heat index will make it feel like it’s 100 to 110 degrees.   This type of heat can lead to heat related illnesses.

What:

Intense heat Saturday. Heat Index 100 to 110.

When:

Impact:

Heat related illnesses are possible. Outdoor activities may need to be limited.

Need to know:

Stay hydrated and try to take cooling breaks with air conditioning if you are going to be outdoors. Sun glasses and sunscreen are a must.

The heat and humidity are on high once again Saturday.  It’s so muggy outside that it feels downright swampy. It’s that type of humidity, combined with highs in the 90s, that will send the heat index soaring to the triple digits. Highs will top out between 91 and 98 degrees, but the heat index will make it feel as hot as 100 degrees to 110 degrees across the D.C. area.

Most the DMV is under a heat advisory or excessive heat warning until 8 p.m.

In such weather, the risk of heat-related illness increases as your body struggles harder to regulate its temperature. Normally, sweat evaporates to cool us down, but with temperatures soaring into the 90s and high humidity, this natural cooling process slows, which makes you feel hotter for a longer time.

Highs will return to the low to mid 90s on Sunday, which will still be hot, but perhaps more tolerable than Saturday.  Highs will return to the 80s by Wednesday.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Irritability
  • Thirst
  • Heavy sweating
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Decreased urine output
