Free blankets available at MLK Memorial Library

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, located on G Street, is handing out blankets to all of those in need.

WASHINGTON — Temperatures are expected to fall to 27 degrees Tuesday night, with winds it will feel like 15 degrees. 

DC Mayor Bowser has activated the District’s first cold weather emergency of the season. Under a Cold Weather Emergency, the District provides services and support to protect residents from life-threatening illnesses associated with severe cold weather. 

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, located on G Street, is handing out blankets to all of those in need. The blankets can be requested at the front desk, no questions asked and free of charge. 

Blankets are available on a first come first serve basis. 

As of Monday, D.C. has issued two hypothermia alerts in the past seven days. 

Signs of hypothermia in adults according to CDC include: 

  • Shivering
  • Exhaustion or feeling very tired
  • Confusion
  • Fumbling hands
  • Memory loss
  • Slurred speech
  • Drowsiness

Residents are encouraged to stay inside or bundle up if planning to go out. Those who need help finding shelter may call 311 or 202-399-7093 for accessible shelter transport. For all animal emergencies, including pets left outside in extreme temperatures, call the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-723-5730.
