HRD director Frank Marks participated in WeatherBrains podcast 864 to discuss the Lakeland High School Weather Club’s impact on the field of meteorology in the U.S.. In October 1967, Weatherwise magazine ran an article entitled, “Meteorology at Lakeland High School,” about an advanced high school Weather Club, and in January 2022 Weatherwise provided a 55 year update on the Weather Club and some of the meteorologists it produced
The Lakeland High School Weather Club, located in Shrub Oak, New York, was led by earth science teacher Jim Witt. This small high school weather club produced an assemblage of weather professionals who went on to take top meteorological positions around the country, ultimately changing the world of meteorology through their contributions. All these years later, none of those students have forgotten their early experiences, and are still in contact with each other and their teacher and mentor, Jim Witt. WeatherBrains wanted to catch up with this amazing group of meteorologists to discuss how the weather club changed their lives.
