Flash floods inundate Riverdale Park for a second time this week

Traffic stalled as rain covered Prince George’s County roads in water Wednesday afternoon.

RIVERDALE PARK, Md. — One Prince George’s County found itself inundated with flash floodwaters for the second time in a week Wednesday.

Riverdale Park, near the Prince George’s County-District line, flooded shortly after 4p.m.

Strong storms caused accidents along Riverdale Road, Kenilworth Avenue, and East-West Highway. The first two of those thoroughfares were even, at times, covered in water.

Floodwaters also surrounded The Riverdale Village Apartment complex near the intersection of Riverdale and Kenilworth. That same apartment complex found itself dealing with flood damage after strong storms also hit the county Monday.

One resident inside the complex told WUSA9 that every unit on the first floor had some type of water intrusion after Wednesday’s round of rain.

Thunderstorms also caused the Northeast branch of the Anacostia River to phase into a minor flood stage Wednesday, according to data provided by the National Weather Service. However, the river and its feeder creeks later receded below that stage Wednesday night.

Riverdale Park resident Aura Orellana watched the flooding unfold from a CVS near the Anacostia River.

“I was there for like an hour, and on my way back, the water went up to my waistline,” she said.

Orellana said she thinks climate change could be behind these latest severe storms.

“I wonder if it’s global warming or something like that,” she said.
