Dry Nice Weekend New Year Arrives With Another Upside Down Storm System

The long holiday weekend continues with cold air that as arrived for today and Sunday. Today will be the coldest of the two days. The western edge of yesterday’s cold front and storm system is to the east and still waiting to clear  Northern New England. Temperatures this morning are all above freezing in Maine while they are down in the single digits and low teens in the Southern Appalachians!  Such is the weather world we live in at the moment and we will likely see another upside down set up next week.

In the meantime it is a cold and sunny Saturday with highs just in the upper 20s and lower 30s. The radars are quiet today and for Sunday too. Tonight will be clear and cold with lows in the upper teens to mid 20s. Sunday with sunshine means highs will reach the mid and upper 30s.

Monday will  bring a warm up ahead of a cold front. However there is very little ahead of this front other than some clouds. Temperatures Monday will reach the 40s before the front passes. Then it is another shot of cold air to follow for Tuesday and Wednesday. It is a wash rinse repeat scenario from the weekend. Sunshine for Tuesday is the outlook with highs in the low to mid 30s. Wednesday look for the same with highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Another upside down storm looms for New Years Eve and New Years Day. It looks almost identical to what we went through Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It also has the same upside down nature where areas to the south will see cold and snow while areas to the northeast in New England especially see mostly rain from this. This setup does look a little bit weaker from the standpoint of wind but it could be another 1 to 2 inch rain producer with snow on the back side. Right now it seems given the position of the front and the wave, precipitation will shut off before changing to snow on the back side. Even the timing of arrival is about the same with rains coming in during the afternoon and evening from west to east but it does seem to end a bit faster next Friday morning. Another storm system could follow over the weekend but there is a lot of uncertainty there too at this stage of the game.
