I’m working on a project that is trying to emulate Icing SIGMETs/AIRMETs using observational data. This has been a steep learning curve; please recalibrate me if I’m foggy on something.
As I understand it, SIGMETs are derived from forecasted or now-casted weather data. My question is, what variables and criteria are used to determine Icing, i.e., how is it parameterized?
Specifically, I have a hunch that the presence of cloud liquid water (CLW) and freezing conditions must be met. Is this correct? Are there other variables at play too? And if this is basically correct, is there a minimum CLW ratio or temperature necessary to declare Icing conditions?
