People of Alabama
“There is so much that I love about Alabama and I have to say the thing that is the most underappreciated is our beautiful environment, landscape and our natural resources. After that, it’s the people. Those things I love the most. Sometimes Alabama is a hard place to love, but there is so much to be proud of if we have the right attitude and come at it with a spirit of joy and appreciation. There is nothing that we can’t do and no place that we can’t go and nothing that we can’t accomplish, but it takes people feeling like there is something to build on with a positive future and we have that. I have traveled a good bit in the world, overseas and over this continent and I don’t think I’ve ever been any place where people are as genuinely warm and interested in people. One of our greatest assets is how we’re a place of community, and I think that comes through individually and collectively as well. That’s one of the things that I appreciate most and find here that is consistent and always meaningful. For the future of Alabama, I think I want us to believe in ourselves, believe that we can be the people that we envisioned, be the place that we aspire to be, that we continually work towards that, and support each other.” – Jay Lamar of Auburn
Lamar was the executive director of the Alabama Bicentennial Commission from 2014 to 2020.
