ELLSWORTH — Slick roads caused by a winter storm Friday was determined to be a factor in a head-on collision between two semi trucks on Kansas Highway 156, killing one of the drivers.
According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, a Freightliner semi driven by Ernesto Rafeal Nevarez Medoza, 41, of Mexico, was westbound on K156, about a mile east of the K140 junction, at about 5:30 p.m. Friday when the truck rounded a curve and jackknifed into the eastbound lane, hitting a Kenworth semi head-on.
Medoza was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said. The driver of the second semi, Derek Jeff Hopkins, 23, of Georgia, was taken to Ellsworth Medical Center with a suspected minor injury.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the report said. Weather conditions were thought to be a factor in the crash.
