Light to moderate snow will fall this afternoon giving us around 1″ of total accumulation. A mix of sleet and snow will continue across Southeastern Minnesota today.

The heaviest snow falls into the overnight before lightening up quickly on Tuesday morning. In the metro we are expecting 1″ to 4″. Those totals are highly dependent on how much, if any freezing rain or sleet mixes in. More ice would mean lower snow totals. I think most of us can count on about 3″ of snow accumulation by Tuesday morning.

Parts of northern Minnesota are dealing with more than a foot of new snow while another round approaches.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says Lutsen received 13 inches of snow Sunday, nearly a foot fell near Bemidji and Ely received 9 inches. Heavy snow stretched from Itasca County and the Iron Range east to the Twin Ports.

NWS meteorologists say “a complex winter storm” will persist through Tuesday, producing a mixture of snow and freezing rain over southern and eastern Minnesota and into western Wisconsin.

The weather service advises that travel conditions will likely become difficult with heavier snowfall north and lighter snow to the south. Roads and sidewalks in the Twin Cities are expected to become icy. Stay tuned to MN DOT’s 511 for the latest on the road conditions.
