Another round of monsoon activity moved into the Phoenix area Thursday evening, with heavy rains and thunderstorms pounding the Northwest Valley first, followed by another dose by around 11 p.m. in the East Valley.
The one-two punch of storms marked the third straight day measurable rain was recorded in the Phoenix area from monsoon storms.
The National Weather Service issued storm warnings for Surprise, El Mirage and Sun City West just before 8:45 p.m. The warning was initially set to expire at 9:15 p.m. but was extended until 10 p.m. The storm was expected to bring wind gusts of up to 50 mph, the weather service said.
Later in the evening, another storm rolled into areas of the East Valley, bringing heavy rains to some areas, including Mesa, after 11 p.m. Another storm advisory was issued for that region, including the Scottsdale area.
The city of Phoenix, on its Twitter account, reported radar detected penny-sized hail falling near Sun City West at around 9:15 p.m.Earlier, a “significant weather” advisory was issued for Maricopa County impacting areas across parts of the West Valley.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory just after 8 p.m. for areas including north Phoenix, Laveen, Glendale, Avondale, El Mirage and Sun City.

Areas along Interstate 10, Interstate 17 and State Route 51 in the West Valley were expected to be impacted.

The Weather Service said that the “strong thunderstorms” were moving southwest at 20 mph and were carrying winds of more than 40 mph.
The area near Lake Pleasant in the northwest Valley had 0.75 inches of rain as of 8:45 p.m., while New River had 0.12 inches and an area north of Deer Valley had 0.16 inches, according to the Maricopa County Flood Control District.
A blowing-dust advisory was also issued just after 8:30 p.m. for the far northwest Valley.
The storm, which moved in from the north, marked the third straight day monsoon storm have reached the Phoenix metro area bringing measurable rainfall.
