I’ve lived in South Dakota, Texas, and now Nevada as a meteorologist, and each place I’ve been to people have said the weather is crazy and that you just have to wait one minute and the weather will change.
I must admit this is true to some extent everywhere. When a cold front moves through it changes the weather either quickly or slowly, but the weather will change. Typically before a cold front moves through, the wind gets stronger and cloud cover increases. Then as the front passes, skies begin to clear and the temperature drops. The stronger the front the stronger the wind and storms will be.
In Northern Nevada we can have sunshine one moment followed by a quick shower of rain or ice pellets the next. This typically happens when there is an area of low pressure aloft with warmer air at the surface. When the atmosphere is unstable in our region we can get pop up showers or storms, but in the plains or southeast instability leads to strong storms with damaging winds, heavy rain, and sometimes tornadoes.
