A tornado touched down east of Flagstaff Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff said a weather spotter confirmed the funnel cloud appeared at 2:06 p.m. along Interstate 40 near Two Guns, which is located approximately 30 miles east of Flagstaff.

The tornado crossed State Route 99 before it dissipated around 2:30 p.m.

NWS meteorologist Dan LeBlanc said the tornado did not cause any damage or injuries. It did not approach any buildings near the relatively empty stretch of highway.

NWS officials were not able to provide an estimate on the wind speeds or the rating of the tornado.

Tornadoes are relatively rare in Arizona. There’s usually only two to three each year.

In 2011, six tornadoes were spotted near Bellemont, including an EF 3 with estimated winds between 135 and 165 mph.
