Due to the bone-chilling temperatures that will sweep across metro Detroit and much of Michigan through Thursday, event venues, universities, and courts are preparing for the inclement weather by canceling events and classes.
Most school districts throughout Michigan are cancelling classes Wednesday, while many have not made decisions about Thursday.
Other places announcing closings include:
36th District Court
The Detroit court building will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
Belle Isle Nature Center
The center will be closed Wednesday.
Central Michigan University
The university will be closed Wednesday.
College for Creative Studies
The college will close Wednesday.
The zoo will be closed Wednesday.
Eastern Michigan University
The university in Ypsilanti will cancel all classes Wednesday. Employees should remain home with the exception of designated personnel who will be notified by supervisors.
The performance of “Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic” is canceled for 11 a.m. Wednesday. According to the Fox Theatre, tickets can be refunded at the point of purchase. Tickets purchased online or by phone will be automatically refunded. Attendees can reschedule for shows taking place on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. For more information, call Ticketmaster customer service at 800-653-8000.
The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed until Thursday at 9 a.m.
Michigan State University
The university is suspending classes beginning 8 a.m. Wednesday. However, university operations will remain open. Full-time faculty and staff are still expected to come to work unless prior arrangements were made.
Michigan Technological University
The university in Houghton will close at 10 p.m. Tuesday and stay closed Wednesday.
The main campus in Rochester Hills and the OU Macomb campus in Clinton Township will close beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday and will reopen at 12 p.m. Thursday. The cafeterias will remain open.
Saginaw Valley State University
The university in Frankenlust Township is closing at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed through Wednesday.
The college will close at 6 p.m. Tuesday and all day Wednesday. The sports dome and urgent care will remain open.
The Mall at Patridge Creek
The shopping center is shut Wednesday. It reopens Thursday.
University of Detroit Mercy
All three campuses will be closed Wednesday, including the McNichols, Corktown, and Riverfront locations.
University of Michigan
The university cancelled classes for Wednesday and Thursday.
Wayne State University
The university will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday and all day Wednesday.
Western Michigan University
The Grand Rapids Downtown, Grand Rapids Beltline and Benton Harbor locations are closed Tuesday. All campuses, including the main location in Kalamazoo, will be closed Wednesday.
