ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Many areas woke up to a fresh coating of snow Thursday morning, along with bitterly cold temperatures. In conditions like these, it’s important to check in with your local senior citizens as the cold can be dangerous to anyone caught in it.
Kim Salisbury, director at Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care said elders are very susceptible to hypothermia. That occurs when their body temperatures fall below 95 degrees. She stresses if you know there is going to be a snow or ice event, make sure there is a plan for emergencies. People should always stock non-perishable items in their home.
Kim also says you should check up on local residents no matter the weather. The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care offers programs and services to serve those in need. If you want to contact them you can call their number listed below.
