Friday weather: Forecasters warn of cold, possible snow on Sunday | Local

National Weather Service forecasters say that lowland snow is possible throughout the mid-valley late Sunday and the coldest temperatures of the winter are likely early next week.

In a special weather statement issued Thursday night, forecasters said snow levels will fall to 1,000 feet or lower on Sunday afternoon and evening as showers begin to taper off. Light snow accumulations are possible late Sunday, forecasters said, but it’s too early to pinpoint where snow will fall before conditions dry out Sunday night and Monday morning.

Even if the mid-valley doesn’t see snow late Sunday, forecasters said they were worried about the prospect of black ice snarling travel on Sunday night and Monday morning.

In the meantime, forecasters expect the lowest temperatures of the season Sunday night and Monday morning, with lows falling into the 20s Sunday night and Monday night. Lows in the teens will be possible in spots that normally are colder, such as Eugene.

Forecasters said they had little confidence in conditions beyond Tuesday. They said it’s possible the weather pattern could produce snow, even at the coast, they said it also could bring an end to the cold temperatures without snow or freezing rain in the lowlands.
