Damaging winds, downpours possible tonight as severe weather moves through

Weather Resources

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 11 PM Friday night for southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Sunshine and southerly flow has helped temperatures reach the 90s across much of the area this afternoon. This combination has made the atmosphere very unstable across southern Wisconsin. Add to that dew points well into the 70s and a nearby front moving through, and you have the recipe for some strong to severe storms Friday evening and night.

As a result, an Alert Day is in the forecast tonight for very muggy and mild conditions, but more importantly, for the threat of strong to severe thunderstorms.

The main threats with the round of severe weather tonight are heavy downpours, frequent thunder and lightning, and gusty, damaging winds of over 60 miles per hour. Some small hail and even an isolated tornado are not out of the question either.

Strong to severe storms will move through southern Wisconsin this evening and tonight. Our latest computer models have suggested some more thunderstorms are possible overnight, but they should just be soakers and shouldn’t be severe.

Rain totals from the storms this weekend could exceed two inches in some spots across southern Wisconsin.
