But merchandise, then Indianapolis Indians donate equivalent to food banks – WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Indians season is temporarily on hold.

The Tribe has found a way to get fans warmed up for May while making an impact on Indy.

“As we socially distance ourselves, it’s a chance for our community to come together,” said Cheyne Reiter, Indians director of communication. “Rather than making a direct donation to your food bank, you can buy some Indians merch and we’ll make the donation for you.”

Dollar for dollar, the Indianapolis Indians are matching each of their online merchandise sales and donating the total to Indianapolis food banks.

Patrick Westrick, the Indians merchandise manager, said, “Everything from baseball bats to little Rowdies, anything to support a great cause. And like we said, if you spend $10, we’re throwing $10. If you spend $100, we’re throwing $100 back at a good cause.”

The Indians are offering free shipping on all online orders to anywhere in the United States. Westrick told News 8 that there have been a dozen different states that they’ve shipped to, and that their online store sales are up nearly 400% just this week alone.

Reiter said the organization is trying to make the best of the situation while getting its fans ready for the upcoming season.

“Just because sports aren’t happening right now doesn’t mean we aren’t going to be here,” Westrick said. “This is helping Indianapolis Indians community come together and while we might not be walking through the gates April 9, it’s maybe giving us a different view of baseball. We might appreciate it more than we did just a few days ago.”

There are only a few days left to help make this project a home run. To shop, go to IndyIndians.com/Shop.

Deadline for the Indians’ Merch Match is midnight Friday.
