BART adding portable AC units to some trains during hot weather

EAST BAY (KRON) — Officials at BART say after experiencing a major system-wide delay connected to mechanical problems during Monday’s extremely hot weather, they are taking steps to mitigate the potential of any additional service disruptions brought on by the heat.

One key adjustment the agency is making — deferring any scheduled preventative maintenance on rail cars.

That will free up technicians that can handle any maintenance issues that may arise during Tuesday’s heatwave.

How are the hot temps impacting atmosphere inside BART cars?

Concord saw triple digit temperatures, but inside of this sparsely populated BART car, riders can feel the cool air conditioning coming up from the window panel.

However when the train is packed during the commute, it’s a different story.

“The air conditioner is working but with so many people piling in it just draws the heat,” said Concord rider Emma Roberts.

BART officials say they are also trying to keep their train control units cool by distributing additional portable air conditioning units along the Richmond, Dublin and Pleasanton lines.

A train control system consists of both hardware and software used to ensure safe train operation including managing train movements system wide.

That is in response to one confirmed heat-related problem with a train control room Monday at the MacArthur BART station, in addition to another possible heat-related train control issue near the Pittsburg/Bay Point line.
